Description
It is almost impossible not to visit Syracuse for those who come to Sicily on vacation.
Syracuse was the most representative symbol of Greek classicism in Italy: it was one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia, like Athens.
And right here is one of the most important archaeological parks with its impressive Greek Theater, the Ear of Dionysus and the Roman amphitheater.
Artists from all over the world came here to admire its monumental remains and be inspired.
The ancient Greek colony, founded in the eighth century BC, developed from the nucleus today constituted by the island of Ortigia, still the true historical center of the city.
Among its narrow streets you can admire various styles of architecture from the archaeological remains perfectly integrated into the urban fabric to the noble palaces, traces of an artistic heritage that has changed over the centuries.
Among the Greek testimonies, you will be fascinated by the Temple of Apollo, the oldest Doric temple in Sicily, and by the Temple of Minerva, now the city's cathedral and the only example of a Greek building still in use.
In the scenic Piazza Duomo you will admire the Palace Beneventano, the Archbishop's Palace and the Church Badia di Santa Lucia, where inside you will contemplate a painting by the famous painter Caravaggio, "The burial of Santa Lucia".
The visit continues reaching the Aretusa Fountain, a water source at sea level, whose myth tells the love story of the nymph Arethusa and the beloved Alfeo.
We will end the visit by tasting an almond or coffee granita.
